Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

Greetings to you!

Each week I send out a short leadership blog that's called "Tuesday at 2:00pm". The purpose of this is simply to provide a brief thought on leadership that you can read and think about in just a few minutes. I send it out every week at 2:00pm (PST) and encourage you to make an appointment with yourself to pause and think about the thing I'm writing about.

Russ...

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

"Personal growth is not a matter of learning new information but unlearning old limits." Alan Cohen

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

This idea of GROWTH is interesting to me. We're going to spend a few weeks talking about it, but personally I'm being challenged to not simply "be content" with where I'm at today. I want to always be growing and developing. What about you? To see past themes, visit my blog HERE.

When I saw this quote recently, I immediately resonated with it.

There are times that I want and need to grow, but I'm 100% limited by my habits, my past experiences and my unwillingness to let some things go.

The other day, I had to replace a headlight bulb on my car. I had replaced one years ago, and it was in a really awkward location, and I remembered how difficult it was.

I went out, and exactly as I did those years ago, I struggled to get it done, until about an hour into the project, I remembered what I had done before.

I quickly finished putting the bulb in and the truck back together.

I then pulled up a YouTube Video on the process, and the first thing the video said would have saved me an hour of work, and it was the thing I had figured out years ago.

I'm sure that never happens to you. I think if I do things the same way, I'll be able to figure them out. When will I learn? When will I remember?

Sometimes to move forward, we need to take a look back first.

How do lessons from your past help you with your future?

DEEPER STILL:

When I'm engaged with a client in a LifePlan, one of the first and most important things to recognize is that we begin with PERSPECTIVE.

Tom Paterson says over and over: "Perspective before Planning". He concluded that if you don't pause to look at where you've come from, you'll have a difficult time determining where you want to go.

The quote above hits on this...

We have such a wealth of experience, lessons learned, successes, failures and life lessons of all kids, and we underestimate the value of our past, our story.

Perspective is the act of looking at something from different views to learn all that we can and only when we have perspective can we then avoid some of those tougher lessons that we don't want to learn again!

If I want to continually grow...

  • I need to REMEMBER lessons from my past

  • I need to DEFINE things that I've learned that apply to me today

  • I need to LEVERAGE my story into the future I'm creating

  • I need to LEARN new things and UNLEARN some old things that might keep me from experiencing all that God has for me!

Think back to something you used to dream about that you were able to accomplish? What did it take to achieve that dream?
