Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

Greetings to you!

Each week I send out a short leadership blog that's called "Tuesday at 2:00pm". The purpose of this is simply to provide a brief thought on leadership that you can read and think about in just a few minutes. I send it out every week at 2:00pm (PST) and encourage you to make an appointment with yourself to pause and think about the thing I'm writing about.

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." Mahatma Gandhi

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

This idea of GROWTH is interesting to me. We're going to spend a few weeks talking about it, but personally I'm being challenged to not simply "be content" with where I'm at today. I want to always be growing and developing. What about you? To see past themes, visit my blog HERE.

I love this thought from Mahatma Gandhi because it's inspirational. I'm challenged to live my life as if it were my last day and I'm challenged to always be learning.

For anyone who feels "stuck", this is inspiration to get moving and Gandhi modeled this in that he was living for something much bigger than himself, and he was in a constant state of learning.

Gandhi says this of himself: "Persistent questioning and healthy inquisitiveness are the first requiste for acquiring learning of any kind."

Do you get annoyed when someone keeps asking WHY?

Are you bothered when someone asks you to show them something?

Do you keep asking until you get a clear answer?

Sometimes I get frustrated when someone keeps asking me questions, and it's usually because of the space I'm in, not the person who is asking:

  • I'm busy

  • I'm distracted

  • I'm focused

  • I'm selfish

  • I'm inpatient

Growth is good and I want to be better at helping people experience it and I want to contribute to others growth along the way!

When was the last time you found yourself frustrated by someones "why questions"? What was going on inside of you?

DEEPER STILL:

I read a great article from Mark Manson where he shares three ways for us to be lifelong learners. I'll summarize them:

#1) BECOME AN INFORMATION OMNIVORE

He challenges us to get news and information from a variety of sources. This provides perspective, contrast and a way to see information in a new way.

#2) REGULARLY CHALLENGE YOUR ASSUMPTIONS

Read and study things that "contradict your current beliefs". Through this, we might find that "we're wrong" or it will strengthen our convictions and beliefs.

#3) GET GOOD AT SCREENING FOR BAD INFORMATION

Be "ruthless in our consumption habits" and remember that there is both good and bad information out there. Don't get sucked into reading and following the bad stuff... screen for it!

While these might seem extreme, there is some great truth to dig into here. If we're going to learn, we need to get our of our own "bubble". Open your eyes to a vast and diverse world and change your perspective. I guarantee you'll learn some things you've never thought about before.

Where do you consume most of your information & news? Do you challenge what you're reading or listening to?

Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:

  • I re-read this book this week just because it's one of my favorites. It's come up in multiple conversations and it's always a good read! The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni

  • CONVENE is hosting a 1-day leadership seminar called READY in San Juan Capistrano on May 29th. Click HERE for more information.

  • Chris Stapletons music just keeps getting better and better! Check out his Essentials Album on Apple.

  • OK, these PLAY-DOH EGGS were a hit with our grandson for Easter! Hours of fun hiding, throwing and playing!

  • I listen to this financial podcast every morning, The Best One Yet, and it's been interesting to follow them during these crazy days around economics in our country. The podcast is fun and informative.
